PNG vs JPG: Which Should You Choose?
| Feature | PNG | JPG (Recommended for photos) |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless | Lossy |
| File Size | Large | Small (up to 90% smaller) |
| Transparency | Supported | Not supported (white background) |
| Best For | Logos, icons, text | Photos, web images, email |
All processing happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. No files, text, or data are ever sent to a server. Your data stays on your device.
✦ tip from dragontail
When I was optimising images for Dragontail's product pages, I converted a batch of PNG screenshots to JPG and the total folder went from 18 MB to 2.4 MB — an 87% reduction. The visuals looked identical on screen. If your PNGs are photos (not logos), converting them to JPG is almost always the right call.
faq
Will transparency be preserved?
No. JPEG does not support transparency. Transparent areas will be filled with a white background.
Is there a file size limit?
There's no hard limit, but very large images may be slow to process depending on your device.
Does this tool send my file anywhere?
No. Your file is never uploaded. Conversion happens entirely in your browser.
